Yesterday I went to the Railway museum and the history of HK museum. The jetlag was so bad I actually napped in the museum after several cups of coffee! Honestly, I enjoyed the journey to the museums more than the exhibits. I strolled through so many shopping centers and open air markets. Fresh meat complete with hooves or entrails dangled from hooks alongside boxes and boxes of dried fruits, salted fish, and fresh vegetables. I even grabbed a "spicy pork with garlic & chives" bun for a snack. There's no rush (and no getting lost) when it's just you wandering through the streets. I never felt lonely, or nervous, or scared - only joy that I'm here. I am so happy I came out here traveling alone. It's exactly where I should be and what I should be doing. Thank you all for supporting me.
Now my friends, I set out on a culinary adventure. My host and his girlfriend are taking me into Central to try many "Hong Kong snacks." I will try my best to take pictures and notes for you, but it will never compare to the taste!
Sadly the weather looks to be gray and rainy for the entirety of my stay, so this picture may be the best I get of HK. Enjoy:

Im soooo happy for you for exploring my hometown like it should be! HK open air markets was a big part of my childhood!
ReplyDeleteAre you using CouchSurfing for your travels? Because that would be awesome.
ReplyDeleteHave I also mentioned how jealous I am?? I'm really excited for you.
I love Hong Kong. It has the best public transportation, but it is not made for bikes. You will have to wait awhile to see massive bike riding...or take a side trip into Shenzen...and there ya go...tons of bikes.
ReplyDeleteSo, when you get to Phnom Penh, Cambodia, you MUST go to the FCC - Foreign Correspondents Club - the best bar in the world! The geckos crawling and hanging out all over the walls and the open air to the Mekong is just amazing. The place reeks with history and ghosts from the past. The beer and food is pretty good, too. Also, Angkor Wat is the tourist site and it is really cool...but I loved Angkor Thom more...
Thanks for the comments! Gabe, I walk through as many wet markets as I can. I am endlessly fascinated by all the ingredients on display. Today during tea time I will get an egg tart in your honor! Chetsi, I most certainly am using couchsurfing! It's been an amazing way to experience HK. Once I get to Bangkok though I plan to stay one or two nights with a CSer and the rest in a hostel off tr main backpacker road so I can meet a travel partner. Terry, thanks for the tips! I am excited about especially about Phenm Peng - I wanted Anthony Bourdain's show about it on the plane :). (my phone is being weird about correcting typos, sorry! I meant phnom penh of course.) miss you guys!
